Coverage Questions

Provincial plans may not cover everything once you leave your home province/territory and typically cover only a limited portion once you leave the country. In fact, the Government of Canada urges all Canadians to purchase supplemental health insurance when leaving the country.

Travelling Outside of Canada

If you get sick or injured while abroad, out-of-country health care can be costly, and your provincial health plan may not cover all of your medical expenses.

Travelling within Canada

It is important to note that the reimbursement of actual costs incurred may vary in every province. There can also be significant delays in receiving reimbursements from the appropriate provincial ministries which could result in significant out-of-pocket expenses.

Travel insurance coverage varies from Card to Card. Your American Express® Card may cover you with certain benefits related to travel, such as:

  • Travel Emergency Assistance1
  • Travel Accident Insurance2†
  • Flight Delay Insurance3†
  • Baggage Delay Insurance3†
  • Lost or Stolen Baggage Insurance3†
  • Hotel/Motel Burglary Insurance3†

If your Card includes these benefits, you may still want to increase the level of coverage to suit your individual travelling needs. We recommend that you carefully review the travel insurance coverage that your American Express® Card provides or call 1-844-200-8959.

Coverage may be extended by calling 1-844-200-8959 and requesting an extension before your existing coverage for your trip terminates. Your request may be approved provided you meet the eligibility requirements and no event has occurred that would give rise to a claim under the insurance. If an event has occurred that would give rise to a claim, the extension of your insurance is subject to the approval of the Insurer.

Note: Coverage (to a limit of 365 days) is permitted beyond the regular maximum number of days allowed outside your Canadian province or territory of residence, provided you receive written permission from your government to maintain your Canadian government health insurance plan beyond the regular maximum. In the event of a claim, you will be requested to provide such written permission.

A trip is a significant investment that you may have booked well in advance. A lot can happen in the time between your trip-related purchase and your departure date. If a medical emergency or other unfortunate event prevents you from going on your trip, you may lose some (or possibly all) of the money you paid for airline tickets and/or accommodations.

Trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance can provide coverage for specific insured risks that could prevent you from travelling as planned.

Examples include:

  • You can’t travel due to an illness, job loss or an immediate family member’s medical emergency.
  • You need to return home earlier than scheduled because of a family emergency or medical condition.

Download the Certificates of Insurance below to help you decide which AMEX® Travel Insurance Plan is right for you. Please read carefully:

Not all risks or expenses are covered. Trip Cancellation Insurance provides for reimbursement of the non-refundable portion of pre-paid travel arrangements if you have to cancel for a covered reason. Some insured risks include: sudden and unforeseen medical emergencies, if your home is made uninhabitable, hijacking, or quarantine. For a complete list, please refer to the Certificate of Insurance or call 1-844-780-0501.

There are various sports that are not covered during your trip, which are described in more detail under the General Exclusions section of the Certificate of Insurance.

General Questions

Sudden and unforeseeable circumstances and medical emergencies can happen anywhere. If you need medical care in another country, your provincial health plan may pay only a portion of the costs. Travel Medical Insurance can cover eligible expenses above and beyond your provincial health plan.

We’re here to help. If have any questions about which coverage may best suit your needs or would like to make changes to an existing policy, please call 1-844-200-8959.

Yes. Your insurance policy is a valuable source of information and contains provisions that may limit or exclude coverage. Please read it before you go, keep it in a safe place, and carry it with you when you travel.

Eligibility Questions

While your age can affect the type of coverage you can buy, AMEX® Travel Insurance has packages and plans for all age groups. For certain plans, if you are age 60 or older, you may be asked to answer a few questions about your health to ensure you have the appropriate coverage available. Please call 1-844-200-8959 if you would like to discuss with a representative.

Possibly, depending on your age and your condition. Please call 1-844-200-8963 to discuss with a representative.

A Medical Questionnaire is required for travellers purchasing the Basic Travel & Medical Plan, Ultimate Travel & Medical Plan and the Essential Travel & Medical Plan who are age 60 or over. Your answers to the health questions (if applicable), will place you into one of five categories and form part of your Certificate of Insurance.

When answering the health questions:

  • Be sure to take your time.
  • Only you (the applicant) can complete and sign the Medical Questionnaire. Please answer each question carefully as incorrect answers can lead to your coverage being void and any claim will not be paid.
  • Have your prescriptions or a description of your medication nearby for reference.
  • Please review the answers you have provided to the health questions to confirm that they are correct.
  • If you have any doubt about your medical condition(s) as it relates to the questions asked, you must consult your physician for advice before completing the Medical Questionnaire.
